What it is
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is brain damage from repeated head impacts, graded in stages. In 614 donated brains, people with the most severe stage were 4.5 times as likely to have had dementia in life, and stage III was also linked, while the mildest stages showed no measurable link.
Where it stands
A large NIH-funded brain-donation study.
